Biography
Dr. Gary Sarafa is a board-certified Family Medicine physician with over two decades of clinical experience and a deep commitment to patient-centered care. He leads the Primary Care division of Avalon Physician Services, bringing warmth, insight, and clinical excellence to every patient interaction.
Dr. Sarafa earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School and completed his Family Medicine Residency at the highly regarded Oregon Health Sciences University. During his training, he provided emergency medical relief through the United Nations and Medical Teams International, serving Kosovar refugees in Shkodër, Albania. He later completed an Academic Medicine Fellowship at the University of Michigan while training residents at Henry Ford Health System.
In addition to his role in primary care, Dr. Sarafa serves as Chief Medical Officer of Avalon Physician Services, a nationally recognized leader in home-based geriatric care. He is also the Medical Director at Garden City Hospital and an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at Wayne State University. Dr. Sarafa is President-Elect of the Oakland County Medical Society and affiliated with several hospital systems, including Corewell Health and Henry Ford Health.
His areas of clinical expertise include preventive care, chronic condition management (such as hypertension and diabetes), dementia, depression, and comprehensive adult wellness. Patients describe Dr. Sarafa as compassionate, approachable, and genuinely invested in their long-term health.
Outside of medicine, he enjoys reading and spending quality time with his wife and four children.
