Expert Wound Care That Promotes Healing and Comfort
For adults and seniors, wounds don’t always heal quickly—or without complications. Chronic wounds, diabetic ulcers, post-surgical sites, and skin breakdowns due to aging or poor circulation can lead to pain, infection, and a serious impact on quality of life if left untreated. At Avalon Primary Care, we provide expert wound care that’s focused on healing, comfort, and prevention.
Our care team includes Karen Genter, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, CWON, a board-certified nurse practitioner and Certified Wound and Ostomy Nurse. She brings advanced clinical training and compassionate support to every wound care visit. Our office RN is also certified in wound care, allowing us to offer high-level expertise and continuity of care across your treatment plan. Working alongside our board-certified physicians, Dr. Christine Shina, Internal Medicine and Geriatric Specialist, and Dr. Gary Sarafa, Internal Medicine, Karen delivers tailored wound management rooted in medical expertise, patience, and compassion. Whether you’re recovering from surgery or managing a chronic condition that affects skin integrity, we take the time to treat the whole person—not just the wound.

What Makes Our Wound Care Different?
At Avalon Primary Care, we don’t just treat the surface. We focus on identifying and addressing the root causes of poor wound healing, whether they stem from diabetes, poor circulation, limited mobility, or other underlying medical conditions.
Our wound care services include:
- Thorough wound assessments and staging
- Debridement (when necessary)
- Advanced dressings and topical therapies
- Compression therapy for venous wounds
- Coordination with specialists as needed
- Education for self-care and prevention
We also keep in close contact with home health nurses or post-hospital care teams to ensure seamless follow-up and support for those healing at home.
A Whole-Body, Patient-Centered Approach
We don’t believe in treating wounds in isolation. Our team—including Dr. Shina, Dr. Sarafa, and our specialized nurse practitioner—takes the time to understand your full health picture. From your medications and chronic conditions to your daily activity level and nutrition, we assess everything that might affect how your wound heals.
Because we also specialize in geriatric care, we are especially attuned to the needs of older adults, including those with limited mobility, cognitive changes, or complex medication regimens. You or your loved one will receive care that is both clinically sound and deeply respectful.
Compassionate Care in a Comfortable Setting
Our Novi office provides a safe, welcoming space where you’ll receive expert care without feeling rushed or overlooked. Our providers are known for their ability to listen, explain clearly, and involve patients in decision-making. We’ll show you how to manage your wound at home, prevent infection, and protect fragile skin going forward.
And if you’re also living with an ostomy, our wound care nurse practitioner is here to support you with practical tools, stoma care education, and skin protection strategies—so you can stay comfortable and confident. Read more about our ostomy care services »
